THE LEGEND OF KEENER 13
Anyone who lived in the Detroit Metropolitan area in the 70’s or is an aficionado of Top 40 Radio knows the story of WKNRkeener13, the top rated Detroit top forty station that abruptly changed formats to beautiful music.
Gone were the hits, the DJ’s, the jingles and the audience. The beautiful music format floundered and over the next forty years the station experimented with different formats. It was actually off the air for some time.
Fast forward to early 2012. A disc jockey from Chicago, Cliff Edwards and his two dogs, a beagle and a pit bull showed up to the station. They barricaded themselves in the studio and begin playing oldies from the swinging sixties and solid gold seventies and started streaming the music online to a worldwide audience.
The station manager at the time, Howard Miller was unable to gain entry to the studio. Edwards and the station kept pumping out the oldies. Authorities were called but failed to take any action against Edwards.
Shortly after his arrival the station the family of Howard Miller reported him missing. To this date he has never been heard from again.
Edwards has accumulated a playlist of over 3,500 songs, many Detroit only hits from Michigan bands.
No one is really sure about the origins of Cliff Edwards. Some say he was a result of an explosion at a dry cleaning plant. Others say he is connected to the intelligence community, possibly the super secret CIA Mk Ultra program. Edwards stated in one occasion he actually traveled to outer space to capture a lost top 40 radio signal from 1969. No one knows for sure.
Meanwhile Edwards very seldom leaves the station. He was sighted at Comerica Park when the Tigers were playing the Chicago Cubs during inter league play and an Italian Beef Stand in Ferndale.
So for the last seven years the oldies have been broadcast worldwide from the station. Efforts to breach the studio have proved futile. The beagle, identified as Jack, serves as an early warning system. Star the pit bull is an enforcer. At some point they were joined by another pit bull believed to be named China. Her role has not been determined.
Reached by phone Edwards was asked how long he plans to keep the station going. He replied “the station expires when I do”.
Update: In 2021 Edwards moved the radio station to Fort Myers Beach FL. The station appears to originate from a shack near the beach and Edwards continues to broadcast worldwide.
So is it urban legend or fact? That remains unanswered. Just how much of the legend of WKNRkeener13 is true, some of it, all of it or none of it? You decide.
